The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit is charged with the responsibility of aiding in the investigation of crimes, both major and minor, committed within our jurisdiction. The unit is comprised of four deputies trained in specific skills ranging from basic fingerprinting and the investigation of Internet crimes to working the scene of a major homicide.
Their primary responsibility is to discover and collect evidence in criminal cases and preserve it for pending court hearings or further investigation. Collection and pre-processing of evidence can include things such as blood, body fluids, hair, fiber, paint chips, fingerprint and shoe impressions.
Our HCSO Crime Lab is equipped to gather, prepare and preserve evidence that is necessary to solve crimes committed within our jurisdiction. The members of the Crime Scene Unit work closely with state and national agencies that process and analyze evidence. The HCSO Crime Scene Unit is under the command of Seargant Stephen Rathbun.
